Quality Standards
There are a number of international and national quality management systems and
it's not easy to determine which is best for your company.
The most widely known Quality Management System Standard is the series of ISO 9000
(ISO 9001, 9002, and 9003).
The ISO 9000 standards contain the basic elements needed to develop a good quality
management system which include all processes related to activities associated and/or
affect product development.
Additional standards have been developed that are industry specific and are based off the
ISO 9001 standard.
These are the AS 9000 Aerospace Standard, QS 9000 Automotive Standard,
ISO 14000 Environmental Standard, and the newly released TL 9000 Telecommunications Standard.
Other models that apply to software development are the Software Engineering Institute's
Capability Maturity Model and TickIT, which are ISO 9000 guidelines for software.
Companies who have implemented one or more of these Quality Management Systems have shown
an increase in customer satisfaction, improved employee moral, and increased productivity
and profitability.
A key to success lies with Executive Management's commitment and
involvement throughout all stages of development, implementation and maintenance of the
quality management system.
Metrics are defined for key processes and data is analyzed to measure your quality system's
effectiveness and for continuous improvement.
Registration may be obtained by being evaluated by 3rd party Registrars who perform
