AS 9000 Standard
AS 9000 is an aerospace specific standard that contains the ISO 9001 requirements in its
entirety plus an additional 27 requirements and 8 notes.
It was created by a consortia of prime contractors that included Allied Signal, Allison
Engine, Boeing, General Electric Aircraft Engines, Lockheed-Martin, McDonnel Douglas,
Northrop Grumman, Pratt & Whitney, Rockwell-Collins, Sikorsky and Sunstrand.
The standard is available through the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).
AS9000 is a great step towards streamlining the multitude of aerospace standards from
the FAA, NASA through the DOD and between the contractor, supplier and subcontractor.
Many military standards such as MIL-Q-9858 and MIL-I-45208A have been replaced with
AS9000.
Many larger aerospace companies are imposing AS9000 on their suppliers but it has
not yet flowed throughout all levels of in the industry.
Recently released is AS9100.
This standard has incorporated many requirements required by DI-9000.
Few registrars are capable of issuing certificates to AS9100 but are working toward certification.
Obtaining AS 9000 certification with automatically include
ISO 9000 certification which will put you on the leading edge of quality within the
aerospace industry.
